This month’s maker challenge is to design a park. Look closely at your community and see how you can design an innovative, family-friendly park for your neighborhood. Maybe there is an abandoned lot you can remodel into a great new park. Or maybe you can transform an existing space that could use some more innovative thinking. I encourage you to go explore your neighborhood and see how you can make and shape it into something quite extraordinary.

What type of park will you create?

Here are some questions and a little inspiration to help you get started with this challenge. Be sure to download a copy of the Maker Idea Guide to help you throughout your making process. I can’t wait to see what you create!

Questions to think about before designing your park

  • What are the needs in your community?
  • Will your park be in a brand new place or repurpose an already used space?
  • How do you envision people using this park?
  • What materials will you need to build your park?
  • Will the park be open year-round? How will you protect equipment during harsh weather?
  • What will make your park unique and innovative?
  • Who else should you involve in the design process?
  • What aspects do you like most about the parks you’ve visited? Will you include any of them?
  • What areas will be in your park? Plants? Trees? Water? Play equipment? Benches? Other?
  • Will there be specific park hours?
  • Who will be responsible for the park upkeep?
  • What other factors are important to consider?
